No, that is odd.

Is there a box or something around the schematic which is stealing the
focus at the last minute (which may not have attributes?)

I tried the lightning detector example, and the attributes are ok. If I
unlock the title block around it, and double click, the second click
actually selects the title-block, and shows ITS attributes (none).

I consider this a bug - I'm not sure if its a new one or not though - I
don't have any old versions handy at the moment either - can check in
the lab on Monday (no time to recompile one now!)
