Use the master repository:
git://repo.or.cz/geda-gaf/peter-b.git
The gettext changes have been committed, and some string fixes have been
committed since.

that the current version of gettext.m4 depends on
AM_PROG_MKDIR_P, a macro introduced in automake 1.8?
I have automake version 1.10, what is yours?
I'd suggest trying automake 1.8 or 1.9. You can have different versions
installed, and choose between them with "update-alternatives".
