I like to work with more than one screen. Having both, the schematics and
the layout editor embedded in a single window wouldn't play nice in such
an environment.

Even if they are on separate tabs?  For example, if you use firefox for your web browser it would be similar to having them within the same main window but on different tabs.  Therefore, all you would have to do is click on the tab for the tool that you want to appear in the window.
