Please, not another HID! It is already a pain with the current two. As a
user you never know if a certain wart is associated with the common
infrastructure or just with the HID. Some usability tips apply only to
one of the HIDS. The GTK-HID has the tendency to lag behind. No active
developer feels responsible specifically for the GTK-HID.
IMHO, the new gerbv shows the way to go: If some important feature is too
slow on some hardware, there should be a switch available in the running
application. Transparent rendering of tracks is a good example for this.
If it works at sufficient speed, it is a real bonus in usability.
OpenGL is also a case where you can't know in advance whether or not you
end up with the speed of a racing snail. Even fast, contemporary hardware
may include graphic card for which there is no accelerated driver
available. On the other hand, with proper drivers OpenGL can yield
blitzing results even on somewhat aged hardware. I am regularly amazed
about the performance of the 3D mechanical CAD application varicad.
Pretty complex structures with literally thousands of polygons pan and
rotate way faster in 3D than my current pcb layouts do in 2D.
