That's not supposed to happen. What version of cvs do you have?

Easy - do a checkout in a separate clean directory. Then, do "cvs
update" in both directories at the same time - now you have two copies
of the latest sources, one with your changes.
You should *always* do "cvs update" before making diffs you plan on
sending to anyone.
