The latest formal release (0.34) does indeed not use autoconf/automake. 
  The last couple of snapshots do except that the distfiles were created 
using the old build system so they're not quite right.

I should take the time to reiterate that 'make distcheck' should be 
thought of as being as important as compiling before making a release. 
I've caught more bugs (missing files mostly) there on various projects 
than I care to think about.
