Thanx, that would be a great first step. I've made a test version, a proof
of concept. It has a very old version of gEDA, lacks some software you
listed but I think it could be used to check whether it would work at
all. I have only Debians and it worked on Debian. Url:

Btw I was wrong about no dependency, it depends on one critical
thing: local X must accept connections on a TCP port. Debian had it turned
off by default; I'm not sure about other distros, but this may be the only
part that would need distribution-specific scripts (to modify X
configuration). Alternatively if someone knows a better way to connect X
when local UNIX sockets won't work, please tell. 

And about the size... It's over 200 megs unpacked. Yeah, it's _huge_, but
it contains everything, from ground up... Actually it's a small Debian
without a kernel.

Unfortunately I have no idea about Knoppix-type packages so I don't know
if my tarball is similar to them or not :)
