What I mean is the user should not be presented with every possible 
configuration line from the system-gschemrc, but just the most important 
subset.

It should be impossible to get to a unusable state simply by 
configuring... I know this is not true for lisp style configuration 
files, but I cannot singlehandedly change the whole code to support a 
more traditional configuration style. The gui tool could navigate new 
users away from trouble.

I'm not sure I get your point. A gui for configuration would make it 
possible not to use an editor for configuration.
